Why a replacement is different from a renewal
On a renewal, you send your old passport in and it does most of the identity work for you. On a replacement, you cannot — which is exactly why replacements attract more scrutiny and why more of them stall.
HM Passport Office looks harder at who you are, at your passport history, and at the circumstances of the loss. Evidence has to be right first time, because a query on a replacement costs weeks rather than days.

Why an emergency travel document is not the answer for most people
An emergency travel document is a single-journey measure with heavy restrictions. You must be travelling within six weeks, many countries limit or refuse it, and some destinations keep it on arrival. It is issued for one trip, not for your life.

How fast can you replace a lost or stolen UK passport from overseas?
Where your last UK passport was issued from 2002 onwards, an eligible replacement is 3 weeks or less, guaranteed, from the moment DHL Express collects your complete document pack. If we miss it, you receive a full refund.
What if my last passport was issued before 2002?
Replacements are guaranteed where the last passport was issued from 2002 onwards. If yours was issued before 1994, or your passport history cannot be linked clearly, it is treated as a first-time application at £1,499, around 4 weeks, best endeavours. Tell us the year and we will confirm.
Do I need a police report?
For a theft, get one. A police report may support a stolen-passport replacement and the cancellation record, and it is useful evidence if the passport is later misused. For a passport that is simply lost or damaged, a police report is not usually the relevant document — the cancellation record is.
Will my old passport be cancelled?
Yes, and that is the point. Once reported, HM Passport Office cancels it so it cannot be used fraudulently. Reporting it reduces identity-theft risk. It also cannot be reinstated afterwards, even if it turns up.
I found my passport after reporting it. Can I use it?
No. Once reported and cancelled, that passport is dead. Do not travel on it. Attempting to use a cancelled passport causes serious problems at check-in and border control. Hand it in or follow ASAP and HM Passport Office instructions for returning it, and continue with your replacement.
My passport is damaged rather than lost. Is that the same service?
Yes, same service and same price. What counts as damage rather than fair wear is a judgement HM Passport Office makes: water damage, a torn or missing page, a detached or delaminated photo page, or an unreadable chip will generally require replacement. Send it to us and we will tell you before you commit.
Can you replace a child's passport that was lost or stolen?
Yes. Child replacements follow the same 3-weeks-or-less guaranteed service at £799 where eligible, with the additional parental consent and evidence that child applications always require. See child UK passports.
Should I get an emergency travel document instead?
Only if you have a single imminent journey and cannot wait. An ETD is restricted to travel within six weeks, many countries limit or refuse it, and some destinations keep it on arrival. For most people a guaranteed 3-week replacement is the better outcome, because you end up with a full passport rather than a one-trip document.
