Local guidance for the UAE
The UAE has one of the largest and highest-earning British populations anywhere, concentrated in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Almost everyone lives here on a residency visa rather than as an Emirati national, and that residency is anchored to a valid passport.
Your Emirates ID and residency visa sit downstream of your passport. When the passport expires, the visa has to be transferred to the new one, and a lapsed passport can complicate everything from renewing a tenancy to routine banking.
Dubai is a global transit hub and the base for constant travel, so an expired British passport tends to surface at the worst moment, days before a flight. The standard overseas process is online-only now and carries no guarantee.
Eligibility
If you are a British citizen living or staying in the UAE, you can renew your British passport without travelling back to the UK.
To renew rather than apply for the first time, you must have held a full UK passport before. For an adult renewal, your previous passport must have been issued after your 16th birthday.
If your name has changed since your last passport was issued, you will need supporting evidence. If your passport was lost or stolen, that is our replacement service rather than a renewal.
British citizen or dual national travelling to the UK? You may not be able to rely on a foreign passport alone. If your UK passport is expired, very old, lost, damaged or never applied for, you risk problems at check-in or boarding. ASAP can help you get your UK passport fast from overseas.
Since 25 February 2026, British and Irish citizens cannot get a UK ETA, so you are expected to prove your citizenship with a valid British passport.
