Ireland is the country where the February 2026 change bites hardest, because British–Irish dual citizenship is extraordinarily common and the Common Travel Area made the distinction feel academic for decades.
It is no longer academic. British and Irish citizens both sit outside the UK ETA scheme, and if you are a British citizen the expectation is that you prove it with a British passport. Living in Ireland does not change that, and the land border does not either — the moment you fly rather than drive, the document matters.
Many people here have not touched their British passport since before the Good Friday Agreement, which frequently means a very old passport or an unclear history rather than a straightforward renewal.
Eligibility
If you are a British citizen living or staying in Ireland, you can renew your British passport without travelling back to the UK.
To renew rather than apply for the first time, you must have held a full UK passport before. For an adult renewal, your previous passport must have been issued after your 16th birthday.
If your name has changed since your last passport was issued, you will need supporting evidence. If your passport was lost or stolen, that is our replacement service rather than a renewal.
British citizen or dual national travelling to the UK? You may not be able to rely on a foreign passport alone. If your UK passport is expired, very old, lost, damaged or never applied for, you risk problems at check-in or boarding. ASAP can help you get your UK passport fast from overseas.
Since 25 February 2026, British and Irish citizens cannot get a UK ETA, so you are expected to prove your citizenship with a valid British passport. If you hold Irish citizenship as well as British, your Irish passport will not stand in for a British one when you travel to the UK.
When an ETD makes sense from Ireland (and when it does not)
An emergency travel document is a single-journey measure with heavy restrictions. You must be travelling within six weeks, many countries limit or refuse it, and some destinations keep it on arrival. It gets you one trip. It does not get you a passport.
