What "treated as a first-time application" actually means
It means HM Passport Office needs to establish your citizenship from source documents rather than from your old passport.
In practice that usually means your full birth certificate, your parents' marriage or birth certificates where descent is involved, evidence of any name changes across the whole period, and documents that connect the name on your old passport to the name you use now.
It is the most document-heavy work we do, and it is where applications most often stall when people attempt it alone, usually because one certificate is missing or a name does not match across two documents issued forty years apart.
We confirm exactly what is needed before submission, and we can help obtain replacement certificates where they have been lost. Those come at additional cost, and we always quote first.
Around 4 weeks, best endeavours: why we do not guarantee this one
We guarantee the services we control. On a first-time application, HM Passport Office may come back asking for further evidence, and no honest agent can promise that will not happen.
So this service is around 4 weeks on a best-endeavours basis. What we promise instead is that your evidence will be right before it is submitted, that we will tell you honestly whether your travel date is realistic, and that we will manage the UK-side process throughout.
If you have travel booked and the date is tight, say so at the outset. We would rather tell you the truth early than take your money and disappoint you.
What if I cannot find the old passport at all?
Very common, and not fatal. If you can find it, send it — even a passport that expired in the 1980s helps establish history. If you cannot, we work from what does exist: certificates, previous names, places and dates of birth, and any record of when and where the passport was issued.

British citizen or dual national travelling to the UK? You may not be able to rely on a foreign passport alone. If your UK passport is expired, very old, lost, damaged or never applied for, you risk problems at check-in or boarding. ASAP can help you get your UK passport fast from overseas.
Since 25 February 2026, British and Irish citizens cannot get a UK ETA, so you are expected to prove your citizenship with a valid British passport. What is included

Additional costs apply only where official evidence has to be obtained for you, such as a replacement birth certificate or marriage certificate. On very old histories this is more likely than on a straightforward renewal, so we flag it early and always quote before spending anything.

My UK passport expired more than 10 years ago. Can I still renew it?
It depends on when it was issued, not how long ago it expired. Issued after 2002: our VIP service may apply, 2 weeks or less, guaranteed. Issued 1994 to 2001: Gold, 3 weeks or less, guaranteed. I genuinely do not know when my last passport was issued. What now?
That is the most common starting point. Tell us roughly when you last travelled on it, your full name at the time, and your date and place of birth. We can usually narrow it down quickly, and we confirm your service before you pay for anything.
Why is a very old passport more expensive than a renewal?
Because it is a different amount of work. A renewal leans on your recent passport record. A pre-1994 or unclear history has to be built from source documents. Certificates, descent evidence, name changes across decades. That is the same evidence burden as a first adult application, which is why it carries the same £1,499 price.
Do I still need to send the old passport if I have it?
Yes, if you can find it. Even a very old, long-expired passport helps establish your passport history and can make the difference between an unclear history and a linkable one. If you cannot find it, we proceed on other evidence.
Is this service guaranteed?
No. This service is around 4 weeks on a best-endeavours basis, because HM Passport Office may request further evidence on a first-time application. Our guaranteed services are VIP renewal at 2 weeks or less and Gold, replacement, child renewal and name change at 3 weeks or less. We will tell you honestly at the outset whether your travel date is realistic.
What if my name has changed since that old passport?
Expected, and we plan for it. We need evidence covering every change between the name on the old passport and the name you use now: marriage certificates, deed polls, divorce decrees. Gaps in that chain are one of the most common reasons old-history applications stall, so we check it before submission rather than after.
I have never held a UK passport at all. Is this the right page?
