Why your UK passport matters in Australia
Australia is one of the furthest points on earth from the office that issues your passport, and that distance shapes everything about doing this badly. A document posted from Perth or Hobart and back is weeks of transit before anyone has even looked at it.
It also has one of the largest British-born populations of any country, and a correspondingly high rate of UK–Australia dual citizenship — often in families where nobody has looked at the British passport in a decade. For many of those households the Australian passport has done all the work, which is exactly the arrangement that stopped being reliable for UK travel in February 2026.
Day to day, an Australian driver licence or Medicare card covers domestic identification and domestic flights, so an expired British passport tends to go unnoticed until a trip home is booked. That is the pattern we see most: nothing wrong for years, then a hard date appears.
