If you are a British citizen living or staying in Spain, you can renew your British passport without travelling back to the UK.
To renew rather than apply for the first time, you must have held a full UK passport before. For an adult renewal, your previous passport must have been issued after your 16th birthday.
If your name has changed since your last passport was issued, you will need supporting evidence. If your passport was lost or stolen, that is our replacement service rather than a renewal.

Since 25 February 2026, British and Irish citizens cannot get a UK ETA, so you are expected to prove your citizenship with a valid British passport. If you hold Spanish citizenship as well as British, your Spanish passport will not stand in for a British one when you travel to the UK.
