What to do if you lose your British passport in Germany

Four things, in this order.

  1. Step 1

    Report it and get it cancelled.

    A lost or stolen British passport has to be reported to HM Passport Office so it can be cancelled on the record. You can do this online through GOV.UK, or on a paper LS01 notification form. Cancelling matters even if you expect to find it — it is what stops the passport being used fraudulently, and it reduces identity-theft risk.

  2. Step 2

    If it was stolen, report it to the German police.

    Go to your local Polizei station and get the report reference. A police report may support a stolen-passport replacement and the cancellation record, and it is useful evidence if the passport is later misused.

  3. Step 3

    Do not rely on the consulate for a replacement.

    British consulates in Germany deal with emergency travel documents, which are a different and much more restricted product. Single journey, heavy limits, and refused or retained by many destinations. They are not a replacement passport.

  4. Step 4

    Start the replacement.

    The sooner your documents are collected, the sooner the guarantee clock starts.

Local guidance

Getting around Germany and Schengen without your British passport

German law expects you to be able to identify yourself on request, and an Aufenthaltstitel or German driving licence generally satisfies that. Schengen travel will not usually expose the missing passport.

Leaving the Schengen area does. The UK is outside it, so the flight home needs the British passport.

Report a theft at your local Polizei station and keep the Anzeige reference — German administrative processes are precise about documentation and you will be glad to have it. If your Aufenthaltstitel is anchored to the lost passport, contact your Ausländerbehörde about interim evidence; the permission itself survives the loss of the book.

British citizen or dual national travelling to the UK? You may not be able to rely on a foreign passport alone. If your UK passport is expired, very old, lost, damaged or never applied for, you risk problems at check-in or boarding. ASAP can help you get your UK passport fast from overseas.

Can I still travel within Germany without my British passport?

For everyday life and travel inside Germany and the Schengen area, your German residence permit, national ID or other accepted photo identification will usually carry you. What you cannot do is travel to the UK, or leave the Schengen area, without a valid British passport. If you have travel booked, start the replacement now rather than close to the date.

What happens if my visa is in my lost passport? How do I prove my legal status in Germany?

Your right to live in Germany is not lost with the passport — the underlying permission still exists on the German record. Contact the issuing authority, usually your local Ausländerbehörde, and ask what evidence they can provide or reissue while your replacement is in progress. Keep your cancellation reference and police report: authorities generally want to see that the passport was properly reported. We work to your timeline so the gap is as short as possible.

Will my existing UK passport be cancelled once it is reported lost or stolen?

Yes, and that is the point. Once reported, HM Passport Office cancels it in their records so it cannot be used fraudulently. Reporting it reduces identity-theft risk. It also means the passport cannot be reinstated later, even if it turns up — so report it once you are genuinely satisfied it is gone.

Do I need to report a lost or stolen British passport to the British Consulate General?

Not for a replacement. Report the loss or theft to HM Passport Office, online through GOV.UK or by paper LS01 form, and report a theft to the German police. British consulates are relevant for emergency travel documents, which are a different short-term product with heavy restrictions and are not accepted for travel to many countries. For a full replacement passport, you do not need a consulate appointment at all.

If I find my passport after reporting it lost or stolen, can I use it again?

No. Once it has been reported and cancelled, that passport is dead. Do not travel on it. Attempting to use a cancelled passport causes serious problems at check-in and border control. Hand it in or follow ASAP and HM Passport Office instructions for returning it, and continue with your replacement.

Can I expedite my passport replacement application?

The permission survives the loss of the book. If it was anchored to the lost passport number, contact your Ausländerbehörde about interim evidence while your replacement is under way rather than leaving it until renewal.
