Getting around Portugal without your British passport
For residents, the residence card matters separately from the passport. GOV.UK says it is a legal requirement to carry a valid residence document in Portugal, and police can ask to see it. If your card was lost too, report that to the police and contact AIMA about replacing it.
Do not assume your residence card is sufficient for a trip to Spain or another Schengen country. The UK guidance on living in Portugal advises carrying the passport and residence document together when entering, leaving or travelling within Schengen. A recognised biometric residence card also matters for the Entry/Exit System. Keep the replacement passport and your Portuguese immigration documents aligned, and tell ASAP about any border crossing already planned.

Can I travel within Portugal without my British passport?
The documents accepted for local identification, transport and border crossings are not necessarily the same. Keep your police report and any valid residence document available, and check the requirements with the relevant authority or carrier before travelling. See the local guidance above.
What happens to my visa or residence permission if my passport is lost?
The passport book and immigration permission are separate matters, but the authority may need the new passport details or a transfer of the existing record. Keep the police report and cancellation reference. Check the local immigration guidance above and contact the authority responsible for your status.
Will HM Passport Office cancel the passport once it is reported?
Yes. A passport reported lost or stolen is cancelled and cannot be reinstated if it turns up later. Do not use it for travel after cancellation.
Do I need a British consulate appointment for a full replacement?
No consular appointment is needed for ASAP’s full replacement service. Report the missing passport to HM Passport Office and follow the local police requirements. Emergency travel documents are a separate option for urgent journeys, not a full replacement passport.
What if I find my passport after reporting it missing?
Do not use a cancelled passport. Follow HM Passport Office’s instructions for returning it and tell ASAP so we can advise on the replacement application.
