Can I travel on a UK GOV Emergency Travel Document?

The UK Government offers an emergency travel document for Brits overseas who need to travel urgently and cannot use their UK passport. However, this document should only be used in emergency situations and carries many caveats:

You must be outside the UK;
You need to travel within 6 weeks;
Your UK passport has been lost, stolen, damaged, is full, has recently expired or is with HM Passport Office or a foreign embassy;
You cannot renew or replace your UK passport from abroad before you travel;
You have had a valid UK passport in the last 10 years;
The country you plan to leave, enter or travel through must accept a UK emergency travel document;
If you change your travel plans, you must apply for a new emergency travel document;
Some destinations (including the UK) will keep your emergency travel document when you arrive.

A UK Government emergency travel document is usually only valid for one single or return journey and only allows you to travel through a maximum of 5 countries. As such, it is not practical for most Brits living overseas who need to urgently renew their passport before an upcoming holiday.
